Driving Guidelines Have Changed

As has driving, and many people still drive the way they were taught in Driver's Ed. It makes sense, when someone more learned than you teaches you how to do what they're good at, you typically continue doing it their way unless taught differently at a later date.

This is the same with driving - we've all heard of the "10 and 2" position on the steering wheel because that's what we were taught. Turns out those lessons are a little behind the times. AAA, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and driving teachers today teach that 9 and 3, or even 8 and 4 are your safest bets. This change comes with two major reasons; 1. That if your airbag goes off you're less likely to get injured, and 2. That from the lower position you have more control and therefore room for reaction in the case of an accident.

Just one more update - the "proper", well, safe, way to turn the wheel is now a "push-pull", where you push the wheel with the top hand and pull with the bottom (as opposed to the cross over taught in the past).

Well we've seen cars evolve dramatically over the last few years, so it only makes sense that driving does too! Always better to be safe than sorry.
